Description
A radiant, glowing Arizona sunset and colorful clouds fill the sky over the Tucson Mountains as seen from just south of Tucson. The plant life of the Sonoran Desert, including the saguaro cacti, creosote bushes, and ocotillos, are lush and green and alive in the sunlight fading sunlight at the end of the day. Cat Mountain, to the right, towers over the southern half this short mountain range is readily visible on AZ Highway 86 (Ajo Highway). Southern Arizona is one of the best places in the American Southwest to observe sunsets, and I hoped to convey this mood here.
I have seen this silhouette of the Tucson Mountains while on I-19 just south of Tucson many times, and felt compelled to paint it in my painterly style. This area depicts a rural part of Pima County near the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The orb of the setting sun, muted by dust and summer wildfire smoke in the atmosphere, can be seen setting behind the peaks.
