Description
"Arizona Winter" showcases the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona and the landscape of the Sonoran Desert at sunrise dusted in snow. While snow in southern Arizona is uncommon, it can happen time to time in the desert. I hoped to convey a magical feel in this painterly, vibrant and colorful fine art piece. We see Finger Rock, Mount Kimball, Window Peak, and Mount Lemmon in the background. In the foreground, plants native to the Sonoran Desert are also covered in snow, struck by the first light of morning. The regal saguaro cactus, spiny Ocotillo, poky cholla, prickly pear cacti, creosote bushes and a barrel cactus all adorn the icy foreground. As always in snowy paintings, I have included two magical "snow birds" against the deep clouds.
I have only seen snow in Tucson once, but it was something to remember. This colorful, chilly scene is from such a perspective that suggest we are due south of Window Peak, which would actually be in the middle of Tucson, so this painting would have to take place before it existed, maybe 100 years ago or maybe during the Ice Age. Prints of this would be a perfect purchase anytime of year, but would be especially appropriate for Christmas and the holiday season! Winter in Arizona is beautiful, even if many parts of it do not receive snowfall very often, as the landscapes are always scenic and the clouds seem to be extra dramatic. And the high peaks of the "Madera Sky" islands, including these Catalina Mountains, always serve as great backdrops.
