Description
A queen butterfly rests on a barrel cactus flower somewhere in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona. Somewhat resembling a monarch butterfly, the queen butterfly can commonly be seen in the Tucson area and is known for it deep orange wings. They are known to migrate between California and Mexico and can fly a long way. This macro, close-up painting features the needles and reddish blossoms of a green barrel cactus as well, a very common sight in southern Arizona. I hope to convey a sense that springtime in the desert southwest can be just as beautiful as other places.
I added a misty, purple radiant aura in the image to give depth to a little world seen up close. Most of my paintings are of landscapes, but this nature scene was a lot of fun to do.
I painted the original as a gift to FAA artist Janet Marie, who is exceptionally supportive of my work and that of other artists, and also works very hard to run the FAA Group "Beauty of Arizona." I greatly appreciate her kindness and support.
