Description
An afternoon storm descends upon the Catalina Mountains to the north of Tucson, Arizona, as radiant sunshine breaks through the clouds to illuminate Mount Kimball. A bolt of lighting strikes the rocky summit of Window Peak, just to the west of Mount Lemmon. The lush Sonoran Desert landscape, fresh and green from the monsoon rains, features the stately Saguaro Cactus, a few springtime golden poppy blooms, prickly pear cactus, ocotillos, and interesting chollas. A windy hiking trail cuts its way through the vegation, leading the viewer into the scene. All but Mount Kimball are deep in shadow of the foreboding clouds.
Thunderstorms are one of my favorite aspects of Arizona's weather - a reprieve from the deadly, dull heat, they bring dynamic, moody clouds, cool atmospheric effects, fog, and brilliant lightning displays. Perhaps my favorite effect is when sunlight manages to filter through the clouds onto the dramatic southwest landscapes. I hoped to convey the mood of an afternoon storm near Tucson here.
This digital painting was hand-painted with a tablet and stylus. I am confident when visiting my gallery, you will find the perfect addition for your home, office or interior design project!
