Artist's Description
The Elephant Head monolith of the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson, Arizona is lit up by the luminescence of late day heavenly rays of sunlight shining through the moody storm clouds during monsoon season. A dramatic lightning bolt strikes the top of Mount Wrightson, the highest point in the range, as rain is just about to pour down into Madera Canyon. Whipple Observatory can be seen atop Mount Hopkins on the right in the mist of the sky.
Sunlight and shadows play across this southwestern landscape of the Sonoran Desert, and ocotillos stand and watch the coming storm as the thunder rumbles at sunset. A lone barrel cactus sits amid the grass and prickly pear along this ridge.
The Santa Rita Mountains are the tallest mountains in southern Arizona and are prominently visible and revered in the communities of Tucson, Vail, Sahaurita, Green Valley, Tubac, and Nogales. They are fun to photograph and even more fun to paint.

About Chance Kafka
Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
