Description
The sun peeks through the clouds over Four Peaks, Arizona in a heavenly fashion on a summer morning during monsoon season. Gentle rays of light pour onto parts of this Sonoran Desert landscape, with the rest in shadow - this is one of my favorite effects from sunlight and clouds. Despite the soaring summer temperatures, the months of July and August provide a bit of relief to many parts of the American Southwest with tall clouds, sweeping storms and lots of wind and lightning. Many mornings are mostly cloudy but allow bits of sun to shine through like this. The landscape also turns lush green from the moisture, as Arizona gets a majority of its annual precipitation from these summer runs. There is a lot of atmosphere to enjoy during this time of year.
The Four Peaks, capped by Browns Peak, are the tallest range of the Mazatzal Mountains in central Arizona, just east of Phoenix. Back roads accessed off Arizona Highway 87 past Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell offer scenic views, traversing unmarred wilderness in Tonto National Forest. Saguaro cacti stand tall and observe the splendor unfolding before them, as the peaks are deep in shadow.
I hope you enjoy this new impressionistic work of art. This area was severely affected by the 2020 Bush Fire, the largest American Wildfire of the season, burning nearly 200,000 acres. I wanted to paint this setting in a gentler, more inspirational setting, full of peace and hope.
