Description
Mather Point's jagged kaibab limestone juts out over the Grand Canyon, the pinnacle of Arizona and the desert southwest, as a cowboy and horse look on upon the depths of the canyon. A flying bald eagle soars over the massive gorge as late day light strikes the impressive buttes and cliffs near sunset. Shafts and rays of sunlight pour onto the glowing foreground and trees, backropped by the deep, dramatic shadow of the Granite Gorge carved by the Colorado River. Prominent features from this point such as Zoroaster Temple are visible.
Grand Canyon National Park is a place of so many interesting features, it can be hard to take it all in. This impressionistic landscape painting is loosely based upon the view along the south rim from where I very first saw the canyon. Much of the Colorado Plateau is quite flat and desolate, only to be broken up by one of the most amazing landscapes in the world. The rocky formations, jutting buttes and constantly changing light and shadow while facing such massive depth and scale is truly awe inspiring. There is such an interplay of color as well. A deep blue sky, red rocks, and then deep blue shadow.
Some dedications:
I felt compelled to paint this idyllic landscape scene, and committed some real time to it. This work was two weeks in the making, and I also want to thank Jerry Bokowski, an accomplished artist in his own right, for his continuing support of my painting, and giving my the inspiration to take on this challenge. I also thank Randy Burns for his continuing support of my artworks and his expressions of appreciation for my desert landscapes, as well as Laurel Adams, for taking a liking to my art so much as to create a Fine Art America contest in my honor. There are many other Fine Art America artists who are also so encouraging, like Janet Marie with her detailed, compelling comments on my work, but I don't have room to list them all. So I wanted to give special attention to these three. It is unlikely I ever would have been compelled to accomplish such a feat such as this without their support.

Chance, when Mom and I visited the Grand Canyon, she said it was awe-inspiring, and your masterpiece truly captures that! I love bald eagles, so glad to see one is soaring in this magnificent painting. Breathtaking perspective, light, colors and composition, and the cloudscape is absolutely awesome, too! F/L

The entire piece is pure eye-candy, with its scrumptious colors, but the sky just pops out at me. You demonstrate how the physical heavens, with its sunlight and clouds, adds to the beauty and grandeur of Grand Canyon. Otherwise it would just be flat and lifeless. You have rendered the rock formations at the best time of day. I am truly fascinated by rocks too, they really rock my world. I appreciate your wonderful reply. It’s an interchange of encouragement for sure. Janet 💕
Chance Kafka replied:
Well Janet, it certainly is motivating to get such wonderful feedback on my hard work. Each thing you've pointed out is something I worked very hard to achieve. Glad I've been encouraging to you as well!

Well dear Chance, look at you, with this one. Your heART is certainly in this one. Stunning artwork! My favorite is the glorious cloud-filled sky. So atmospheric, with the lovely lighting on the Canyon walls, the crepuscular rays, reaching out and touching all this majesty. Stopping along the Canyon’s edge opens up a world of aweSoMe grandeur. Thank you for rendering your emotional connection to this wondrous place of beauty. Jerry and I are happy to know that we have been a part of your journey and contributing to your artistic sensibilities. Keep shining! LF Janet 💕
Chance Kafka replied:
Janet, what a wonderful comment to receive from you. In this grand work, I tried to include a little bit of everything of the natural elements that can have a broad appeal. It is so cool to hear folks who have different "favorite" things about this work - I figured the clouds would be your favorite. I thank you again for contributing to my artistry, as you've said. It is much appreciated!
