Description
The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River are seen amid the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This sprawling oasis of rivers, waterfalls, lakes, streams, forest, granite, steamy pools, and geysers sits atop a molten volcanic caldera, forming an otherworldly, high-elevation plateau in northwestern Wyoming as well as slivers of Idaho and Montana.
Named "The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone," this 24 mile long, 1,000 foot deep abyss is carved by the raging rapids of the Yellowstone River. This painterly artwork depicts the view from Artist Point, one of the most scenic viewpoints in the entire park, with rows of trees intermixed with jagged granite, foamy roaring water, mist, and fluffy clouds in a huge Wyoming sky. This landscape must be experienced in person to grasp the magnitude of it. Once Artist Point is reached, it's very difficult to leave because the view is so enchanting. I intermixed sunlight and cloud shadow. It is very common in Wyoming for clouds to obscure the sun in some places and not others. Near the foreground, only a few trees are illuminated. But a part in the cloud has allowed the mighty waterfall and surrounding mountains to be illuminated in light. I went for a bit of a vignette effect with the silhouetted trees up close. I also wanted a soft, subdued effect.
Artist Point is a fantastic place to soak in Wyoming's most unique landscape. It has been inspiring artists for hundreds of years, including world-revered Western landscape painter Thomas Moran, whose rendition of this area is in the Smithsonian Museum. This vista was named Artist Point because it was believed Moran sketched the landscape near the point.
