Description
The Grand Canyon is blanketed in snow on a frigid winter day. Seen from Yavapai Point at sunset, the Isis Temple and Cheops Pyramid tower above the Black Granite Gorge. Yavapi Point is along the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. A Cliffrose tree and a few of its solemn, leafless friends are also dusted in snow as an agave plant is seen in the foreground. Golden bands of sunlight streak across the horizon as the weak afternoon sun will soon set. Winter sunsets are among my favorites for their often atmospheric and misty moods. The Grand Canyon is no exception. I imagined this scene being around Christmas time. To really convey a magical magical winter wonderland, I even included my signature birds in the corner. As with other snowy paintings I have done, they are bright, white, magical snow birds, complimenting the landscape.
Many people do not realize the Grand Canyon gets cold and snowy (or anywhere in Arizona, for that matter). Most of its visitors come in the warmer months, though the South Rim still gets some winter traffic. The North Rim, ten miles away as the crow flies but five hours away by car, is actually closed for nearly half the year to due to snow. This is due to the relatively high elevations of the area. While the bottom of the canyon, carved by the Colorado River, is barely 2,000 in elevation and rarely gets below freezing, the canyon is so deep that each rim are around a mile higher; the South Rim is about 7,000 feet high and the North Rim over 8,000 feet high. Similar to the closest city of any nearby significance, Flagstaff, and much of Northern Arizona, the rims of the Grand Canyon do experience cold, snowy winters. This is in sharp contrast to the metro areas of Phoenix and Tucson in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona. Much farther south and lower in elevation, they almost never experience true winter weather. So, with such a huge portion of the state's population living in Southern Arizona, the state is instantly thought of as having warm year round. This painting is my attempt to showcase the snowy beauty of the Grand Canyon in winter and exemplify how beautiful and diverse the American Southwest truly is.
I have been to the Grand Canyon twice. My first trip was in December of 2018 and I certainly appreciated the solitude and majesty of the canyon in the winter. It wasn't as snowy as this, but it was cold, and the low-angled winter sunlight and heavy, foggy clouds cast the entire landscape into a moody, tranquil, nearly dreamlike stillness that only winter can yield.

Magical landscape! I only was at the North Rim, so was unaware of this scene and its prominent features, that you so beautifully painted.

Excellent musical piece Chance! The light and snow patterns bounce with rhythm...dancing in harmony with those expressive brushstrokes and cool cool blues. Very nice work!
