Description
The North Star sits amid a starry sky overlooking Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Seen from between Mather and Yaki Points along the South Rim, the mighty Isis Temple can be seen in the hazy distance. An agave plant sits amid a rock, giving way to pinyon pines, limestone rock walls and eventually the seemingly bottomless chasm of the canyon.
If you've paid any attention to my art, you know that stars are one of my favorite subjects. There is something magical, perhaps divine, about stars, especially in the American Desert Southwest. The air is a little clearer, and the silent nights force your attention to the billions of twinkling orbs in the celestial sphere. I have had the fortune, a few times, to go where it is so dark, yet the sky is so clear, that objects can be seen in nothing but starlight. This is the feel I go for in my nocturne paintings - a hazy, filmy, but distinct light that only a dark night sky can provide.
Also, if you've paid any attention to my art, you know the Grand Canyon is one of my favorite subjects. I have only visited twice, but each experience is unforgettable in the sense that the first glance of the canyon feels like an illusion. Its features, depth and width overload the senses and seem unreal at first. The Grand Canyon is also a great challenge. There are so many layers, changing angles, shapes, shadows, and variations that just trying to sketch out the place can be overwhelming. As with all of my paintings (digital or otherwise), some of my efforts involve relying more on color to set a mood, others light. Each attempt brings about a different result. This hand-drawn digital painting was not easy, but it was a very enjoyable process. It is a combination of two of my favorite gifts of nature - a radiant night time sky and the Grandest Canyon on Earth. I went for a unique, almost surreal feel, in this work of art, with almost a neon feel.
I hope you enjoy viewing my art. If you need help selecting the perfect print don't hesitate to contact me. There are so many different products to enjoy that I am confident you will find something to love here.
