Description
The Grand Canyon in winter is a secluded and alien place to those who have only ever seen it in the midst of summer. Located in the Colorado Plateau highlands of Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park gets a fair amount of snow in its upper reaches. Here, we look east toward O'Neill Butte with Wotan's Throne and Vishnu Temple in the distance, backdropped by foreboding winter clouds as afternoon sunlight is cast upon the landscape and kaibab limestone rocks of the South Rim. This wintry landscape is dotted with pinyon pine trees, also covered in snow, like something out of a Southwestern Christmas Card.
My first ever trip to the Grand Canyon was in the month of December. The crowds were thin, and ice and snow permeated all of the rocks and crevices along the south rim. I was unable to get many photos of the snowy landscape in afternoon light, though, as deep fog enveloped much of the canyon. So I have painted what snow along the canyon would look like from a vantage point just west of Mather Point, with just a bit of atmosphere. Mather Point is among the most popular lookouts of the entire park and is among the first glimpses many tourists get of the canyon. There is a path from Mather Point to Yavapai Point, offering many views to the north and east. Often a very busy area, tourism falls significantly in the cold winter months, allowing a more intimate and quiet canyon experience. I hoped to evoke the feeling of peering into Arizona's crown jewel in the solitude of a winter wonderland in this impressionistic, painterly work of art.
