Artist's Description

Heart Mountain is an unusual, isolated mountain rising above the arid Bighorn Basin of northwestern Wyoming. Prominently visible from the town Cody all the way to Powell, this 8,300 mountain is said to have formed from a tectonic thrust fault, referred to as a "Klippe." In short, it is basically an ancient volcanic rock slide. Shaped by years of erosion, its crooked peak loosely resembles a heart from certain angles, hence the name. Cedar trees and sagebrush dot the dry landscape on a dreary, cloudy day. Wyoming's high elevation plains and basins experience rapid changes in weather. Low-lying rain clouds hang in the sky just over this western landscape, offering a reprieve from harsh sun earlier in the day. This grayish blue mood is very common in Wyoming during all seasons, and while many people hate it, I find it to be relaxing. A simple wooden fence divides the landscape. About Chance Kafka

Chance Kafka

Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school. His articles and feature photos garnered him acclaim across the region which inspired him to pursue journalism as a degree in college. Chance served as a teaching assistant for a...
