Description
Looking southwest toward the iconic rock formations and buttes of Monument Valley on US Highway 163 near Mexican Hat, Utah, we see a dramatic summer thunderstorm brewing in the distance with a fierce bolt of lightning. This desolate highway traverses some of the sparsest land in America in a far-flung area along the Utah and Arizona border near the four corners. Inspired by a stop along the highway during a road trip through the four corners region, we look out upon the same stretch of road that Forrest Gump stopped running in the aptly named 1994 film. Having finally visited Monument Valley, I can say without a doubt what people mean when they say it is hard to get to, far from any interstate or cities of any size, but the beautiful drive through Navajo Nation made these views well worth it.
