Title
Kokopelli and an Arizona Sunrise over the Santa Rita Mountains
Artist
Chance Kafka
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
Kokopelli plays his flute amid a spectacular Arizona winter sunrise as the first sunlight of the day pours down into the Santa Cruz River Valley at the base of the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson. The orb of the sun is just peeking up over the Josephine Saddle above Madera Canyon between Mount Wrightson and Mount Hopkins as Elephant Head Butte to the right gits a glint of this dawn light.
Ocotillo, creosote bushes and prickly pear cactus plants dot the Sonoran Desert landscape as the chill of the night recedes as the sun breaks through the cloudy sky. A sunrise like this can easily be viewed just outside of the communities of Sahuarita or Green Valley.
Kokopelli, a timeless symbol of the Southwest, is believed in Native American tradition to be a harbinger of mischief, fertility and rain. This is a continuation of my depictions of him amid Arizona landscapes.
