Description
Kokopelli appears at Lost Dutchman State Park, back-dropped by the jagged Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, Arizona, at the eastern fringe of the Phoenix metro. A raging monsoon (veiling a distant bolt of lightning) is coming in over the Flat Iron formation of the rocky peaks as dramatic cumulonimbus clouds fill the summer sky, bringing cool moisture to the otherwise scorching Sonoran Desert during the summer monsoon season.
Kokopelli, a spirit playing a flute, is believed within many Native American traditions to be a harbinger of rain.Saguaro cactus and creosote bushes with their little yellow flowers line the desert valley floor. The Praying Hand needle formations can be seen just to the left of the rainbow in the sky. This painting is an interesting combination of famous Arizona folklore, and is apart of an ongoing series of little paintings I plan to do featuring Kokopelli at notable Arizona locations. The Rainbow also mystically suggests a pot of gold at the end of it - as the end of the rainbow appears to be in the Superstitions - as these mountains are a part of common folklore claiming that there is a secret gold mine hidden within the mountains.
