Title
Kokopelli's Sunset Song
Artist
Chance Kafka
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
I have long been fascinated by Kokopelli, the ancient flute player and fertility spirit depicted in countless naive American petroglyphs and a timeless symbol of the American Southwest. Here, I have painted him playing a song at sunset, as the sun sets over the blazing southern Arizona desertscape. Ocotillos and saguaro cactus surround him as distant peaks glare in the last light of the scorching day. Kokopelli's flute playing was believed to chase away winter and also bring rain; his song here signals a reprieve from the sun as the cool night is fast approaching.

Really fascinating painting. Love the way that Kokopelli is brought to life against the coming sunset. You can almost hear his music here.
