Description
I have painted one of my favorite sights growing up in Wheatland, Wyoming. Laramie Peak, the tallest mountain the Laramie Range, which spans from the Colorado border north toward Douglas and curves west to Casper, is the highest peak of the range. Views up to 100 miles in several directions are afforded on the 10,000+ ft summit.
Here, on an early winter morning, the full moon is setting behind the rugged peak as clouds clear the way to reveal fresh snow and the first light striking the top. A pronghorn stands and looks at the viewer - hundreds of these game animals can be seen roaming the plains of Wyoming. And down below, the Laramie River snakes its way toward the mighty Laramie Mountains, and mist and fog fill the valley from a chilly, icy night.
Much of the Laramie Peak area is located in the Rout - Medicine Bow National Forest and is some of the most rugged, remote land in southern Wyoming. A lot of the douglas firs in its frests badly charred during the massive Arapaho Fire in 2012, but new growth is returning to the area. The twiggy, barren coniferous trees along the banks of the river are to reflect the damage from this fire.
