Title
Lights of Tucson, Arizona with Saguaro Cactus
Artist
Chance Kafka
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
The lights of Tucson, Arizona are seen during twilight after a brooding monsoon season sunset. The silhouette of a Saguaro cactus is seen in the foreground with the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains rising behind it. These cacti are particularly iconic to the Sonoran Desert of the American Southwest.
This painting of Tucson's skyline and city lights is inspired by the Babad Do'ag overlook vista, the first major pullout of the Catalina Highway's vertical ascent to the top of Mount Lemmon to the north of the city. A panoramic view of the Old Pueblo is readily visible here, and has ample parking for visitors to get out and look at the sweeping views. This particular view faces west-southwest, and the very same cactus featured here is just a few feet down from the viewing area along a primitive trail. The Tucson Mountains can be seen rising in the distance, backdropped by an ambient glow from the vanished sun. Babad Do'ag is an enjoyable vista to watch a sunset and see the lights come on during the twilight hour. It is not nearly as crowded as A Mountain near downtown, and not as remote as the Winy Point overlook further up the Catalina Mountain range.
It is my hope this latest painting takes you to this spot for you to enjoy this view, as I have many times. The drive down the highway at night offers similar views to this as well and is always a treat.
This painting is the final of a series of paintings I did to challenge myself to complete five 16"x20" paintings in five days.

Wonderfully ethereal painting, Chance. I'm getting a very enjoyable introduction to the scenery of Arizona through your work. I had to look up "Babad Do'ag" since I've never heard of it before. Frog Mountain, right?
Chance Kafka replied:
Thanks so much, Peggy! Yep, and the little sign at Babad Do'ag indicates that is what it means.

Thanks Jerry, seeing one from up there and then waiting for the lights to come in is well worth the wait!
