Description
Mather Point is the first site many visitors to the popular South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park see. The Grand Canyon is the most iconic landscape of Arizona and the American Southwest. A lightning bolt touches down in the far distance beyond Zoroaster Temple and O'Neill Butte. The temples and cliff faces of the canyon are illuminated by glorious sunlight filtering through the clouds near sunset, as the rocks, pinyon trees, crags and Kaibab Limestone of Mather Point catch some sunlight as well. A torrential monsoon thunderstorm can be seen pouring over the north rim beneath massive cumulus clouds. The contrast of dramatic light and shadow set this impressionistic scene ablaze. The Black Granite Gorge and Bright Angel Canyon can be seen as well. The vistas, ridges, cliff faces, gorgeous and carved mountains formed by the Colorado River amid the Colorado Plateau are extremely vast and complex. It is my hope this painting does a good job celebrating Arizona's crown jewel.
