Description
A full moon rises over the rugged Organ Mountains and city lights of Las Cruces, New Mexico on a chilly winter night. Seen from an overlook near Las Cruces International Airport near I-10, the city is laid out in the Mesilla valley like a bowl of sparkling gems, a welcoming beacon of civilization after hundreds of miles of open desolation since Tucson.
Las Cruces is New Mexico's second largest city, some 250 miles south of Albuquerque. The sparseness of New Mexico is part of its enchanting charm, as are its rugged desert mountains. But seeing the lights of one of its few cities slung out on the desert floor below a glowing full moon is a welcome reprieve from the depth of the darkness that overcomes much of this wild southwestern state in the blanket of the black nights.
