Description
Morning sunrise light illuminates Devil's Tower in northeastern Wyoming while the forest below is still deep in shadow. Rising above the prairie of the Powder River Basin in the Wyoming section of the Black Hills, this mountain monolith very much resembles a very large tree stump. Also known as Bear Lodge, this vertical column of rock is a sacred area to Native Americans of the area, whose spiritual beliefs suggest the tower was created by a supernaturally large bear clawing and scratching a "normal" looking mountain to get its unique appearance. The monolith is perhaps the most recognizable natural feature of all of Wyoming outside of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
Located well off the beaten path near the tiny town of Hulett, Devil's Tower National monument is a popular camping, tourist and recreation area yet manages to still feel far from the hustle and bustle of normal life. For instance, the closest Walmart is 60 miles away in Gillette, WY. Much of Wyoming is very rural in nature. The climate in the Black Hills is a bit milder than most other parts of Wyoming, and its rolling hills, granite boulders and pine forests offer a quiet escape for many.
This is part of a continuing series of Western landscapes I intend to paint.
