Artist's Description
Morning sunrise light illuminates Devil's Tower in northeastern Wyoming while the forest below is still deep in shadow. Rising above the prairie of the Powder River Basin in the Wyoming section of the Black Hills, this mountain monolith very much resembles a very large tree stump. Also known as Bear Lodge, this vertical column of rock is a sacred area to Native Americans of the area, whose spiritual beliefs suggest the tower was created by a supernaturally large bear clawing and scratching a "normal" looking mountain to get its unique appearance. The monolith is perhaps the most recognizable natural feature of all of Wyoming outside of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
Located well off the beaten path near the tiny town of Hulett, Devil's Tower National monument is a popular camping, tourist and recreation area yet manages to still feel far from the hustle and bustle of normal life. About Chance Kafka

Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
