Description
The nearly full moon rises above Mount Wrightson seen from the Sonoran Desert uplands near Green Valley and Sahuarita, Arizona. The peak, sometimes referred to as Baldy, is the tallest mountain of the Santa Rita Mountain Range to the south of Tucson, Arizona. Its west facing, rocky slopes spectacularly catch fading sunlight at sunset and are a dramatic feature of this desert landscape.
I included ocotillos, chollas, creosote bushes, and some chollas in the subtle foreground, which are predominant plants in this region. A like this of the peaks can be seen anywhere in the region. The road that eventually leads to Madera Canyon offers many expansive, unobstructed views of the mountain range. There is are two trails that ascend Mount Wrightson from the top of Madera Canyon. The peak is so tall that it is said one can see well over 100 miles in several directions from the peak, including deep into Mexico.
This painterly work intends to convey the tranquil yet dramatic mood of last light in the Arizona desert. Golden hour is the perfect time to watch the moon come up over the landscape.
