Description
Seen from the northern outskirts of Tucson, Arizona in one of the many nature preserves between Oro Valley and Marana, the nearly full moon rises above a snowcapped Mount Lemmon on a peaceful winter evening. The fading evening light illuminates the jagged peaks of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness as Pusch Peak, Bighorn Peak and the edge of Mount Kimball rise in front of mighty Mount Lemmon. A towering Saguaro cactus catches the last glints of light as the sun sets deep in the southwest behind the Tucson Mountains.
While the low elevation valleys of the Southern Arizona desert very rarely receive snow, the towering Madera "Sky Island" mountain ranges are often snowcapped in the winter months. Contrary to popular belief, the Sonoran Desert is not hot year round. While daytime temperatures are usually comfortably warm in the day time (and much warmer than locations farther north), the low humidity and lack of cloud cover can cause the air to cool dramatically as soon as the sun sets, and temperatures below freezing are not common. The days are still short, the shadows are long, but the winter light play produces some of the best colors on Tucson's landscapes.
