A starry night sky and the bright, glowing outer Milky Way Galaxy light up Thimble Peak and Sabino Canyon in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona. A rocky trail leads off into the Sonoran Desert splendor as tall saguaro cacti, a barrel cactus, ocotillos, and bushes watch the stars.

Nighttime scenes, or nocturnes (however you wish to call them) are among my favorite things to paint. The effect of starlight highlighting the features of a southwestern landscapes is something I find very magical. The Milky Way is a favorite of mine, and if you go to a dark enough place on a clear enough place, you can actually see by its light once you let your eyes adjust.

Sabino Canyon is a popular area for hikers in the Tucson area. Should one ever be daring enough, they could hike all the way to the summit of Mount Lemmon several thousand feet above, way past Thimble Peak (which overlooks the canyon). Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes.
