Description

A starry night sky and the bright, glowing outer Milky Way Galaxy light up Thimble Peak and Sabino Canyon in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona. A rocky trail leads off into the Sonoran Desert splendor as tall saguaro cacti, a barrel cactus, ocotillos, and bushes watch the stars.

Nighttime scenes, or nocturnes (however you wish to call them) are among my favorite things to paint. The effect of starlight highlighting the features of a southwestern landscapes is something I find very magical. The Milky Way is a favorite of mine, and if you go to a dark enough place on a clear enough place, you can actually see by its light once you let your eyes adjust.

Sabino Canyon is a popular area for hikers in the Tucson area. Should one ever be daring enough, they could hike all the way to the summit of Mount Lemmon several thousand feet above, way past Thimble Peak (which overlooks the canyon). The remote wilderness of the Coronado National Forest land surrounding Mount Lemmon leaves one hard pressed to believe a metro of nearly a million people is a only 20 or so miles away.

I hope this painting transports you to a scene of divine beauty under a heavenly night sky.
