Description
Sabino Canyon is one of the most popular recreation areas near Tucson, Arizona. We see a trail leading off toward Thimble Peak, which overlooks the canyon. It is surrounded by stark ocotillos, state saguaro cacti, rocks, bushes, and prickly pear cacti.
Located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the Sabino Canyon Recreation area draws many visitors, even on hot and sunny afternoons like the one depicted here. Popcorn cumulus clouds float through the blue sky but offer little relief from the stark sunlight. This dusty path is actually a cutoff trail from the overflow parking area which meets up with the main paved trail about a mile or so away. This is a "road less traveled" in the Sabino Canyon area, offering stunning views of the Sonoran Desert scenery and thimble peak, showcasing the biodiversity that manages to survive the heat of the American Southwest.
It was my hope to bring the viewer right to this trail as it would look standing there. I used a lot of depth and perspective to show how all variety of features of nature and the landscape harmonize with each other, from the clouds in the sky to the very close ocotollos framing the foreground. In the vast Sonoran Desert, there is so much for the eyes to take in. I wanted to give a bit of soft focus to the ocotillos up front, with the focus on the more distant lay of the land, to give the feel of this being seen through a camera lens or the eyes.
