Description
The glowing sun sets over Salt River Canyon in eastern Arizona on a foggy, monsoon season day. The crepuscular rays formed by the sun setting behind the mountains pours down into the canyon, lighting the Salt River in shades of gold and pink. Juniper trees dot the bluffs and mesas that compromise this spectacular canyon of the desert Southwest.
The Salt River cuts through the highlands of the Mogollon Rim in the Tonto National Forest area between the towns of Globe and Show Low, forming this landscape that is often called the"Little Grand Canyon" or Arizona's "other" Grand Canyon, as its shape and forms closely resemble that of the Grand Canyon on a smaller scale. Much of the canyon is located on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. US Highway 60 traverses this remote canyon, descending thousands of feet to cross the Salt River before rising back up, with many wild hairpin turns and pullouts to enjoy scenic vistas such as this one. The Salt River eventually "drains" into Phoenix (much if is dry by the time it reaches the lowlands of the Valley of the Sun).
It is my hope, this radiant, ethereal sunset painting takes you to one of these overlooks, enjoying this mini-Grand Canyon at the end of a scenic day in the desert.
