Description
The Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area of eastern Arizona comprises the Salt River Canyon and its surrounding mountains. With gorges and depth resembling the Grand Canyon on a smaller scale, the hairpin curves of US Highway 60 offer stunning views of the landscape between Show Low and the Globe-Claypool area in Gila County. Apart of the vast Tonto National Forest, there is incredible diversity in the geography and landscapes of the mountainous Mogollon Rim Region region extending from north of Safford all the way through the fringe of Phoenix to Sedona and beyond. The Salt River area is no exception and features everything from desert cactus to scrub juniper trees. Much of the canyon is also located within San Carlos Apache Reservation land. The highway can be seen crossing the river over a stately bridge.
