Description
Snow capped Humphreys Peak of the San Francisco Peaks overlooks the forest and grassland just north of Flagstaff, Arizona at sunset. I set this painterly scene near Buffalo Park, which affords great views of the volcanic peaks. The last light of day strikes the mountains as the serene meadow and forest is already in shadow. A trail leads off past a fence through the grass.Deep blue tones contrast with rusty dirt, golden grass and deep green trees.
Located in northern Arizona, Humphreys Peak is the highest point in the state, and is also home to the Arizona Snow Bowl, a massive ski area. The Coconino Plateau, a highland situated beyond the Mogollon Rim all the way to the Grand Canyon, is a high, heavily forested and grassy upland which is home to Flagstaff, the largest city in northern Arizona and the only community of any significant size north of I-40. The huge volume of tourists to the Grand Canyon and other natural landmarks of northern Arizona easily fool one into not realizing how remote this massive region really is. Thick forests, rolling plains, wide open vistas, freezing winters, snowy peaks, lonely roads spanning hundreds of miles, heavy snowfall and deep gorges comprise this part of the state. Far away from bustling, palm-tree lined cities and burning heat, Northern Arizona is a whole different world but makes the state of Arizona that much more special.
It is my hope this painting introduces you to a slightly "lesser" seen side of the state, but one that is just as beautiful as the more famous areas.
