Description
The last light of day strikes Mount Wrightson, Mount Hopkins and Elephant Head Butte of the Santa Rita Mountains as Madera Canyon and the Josephine Saddle sit in cool blue shadow. Towering over the communities of Green Valley and Sahuarita in the Santa Cruz River Valley just south of Tucson, Arizona, this range is one of the most prominent in the Sonoran Desert and Southern Arizona, and offers some very dramatic evening views when viewed from the valley. Late day sunlight filters through the dramatic, moody clouds onto the follow floor and mountain tops, also bringing to life the green and gold lushness foreground plant life. There are ocotillos, creosote bushes, some mesquite trees, prickly pear cactus, and a barrel cactus, as a windy dirt road winds off into the distance.
Rural Southern Arizona provides endless inspiration landscape impressionism. This painting was trying my hand at not only capturing the form of this southwestern desert during the late day but the mood as well. Dramatic, yet quiet. Quickly changing light and shadow, yet seemingly frozen in time.
