Signal Hill is a nondescript rock pile home to some amazing petroglyphs in Saguaro National Park on the backside of the Tucson Mountains in Southern Arizona. Tucked away off a rocky forest service road in the middle of pristine Sonoran Desert landscape, away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Pueblo, this rock mound has managed to hold a record of human artistry for eons. The most curious rock art to me is that of a spiral; we see it on the left in this painterly depiction, as the rolling, saguaro cactus and ocotillo-laden landscape gives away to the Tucson Mountains. A waxing gibbous moon rises as it is late afternoon and wispy clouds freely move across the blue sky. This is a timeless landscape, thanks in part to the National Park service for preserving it, as well as the mountains conveniently blocking the view of Arizona's second largest metropolis. Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
