Description
Chollas in the Sonoran Desert soak up a bit of winter sunlight emerging from stormy, cloudy skies. These chollas were found in the Santa Cruz River Valley south of Tucson near the base of the Santa Rita Mountains and do a great job of reflecting sunlight. The weird lighting in the sky and many shadows and highlights promoted me to shoot this shot utilizing a High Dynamic Range (HDR) method to really show the darkness of the clouds and the light of the desert plants. Winter in Arizona affords some great opportunities for landscape photography due to the low sunlight, interesting clouds and plant-life that thrives year round. Amid the chollas, we also see creosote bushes and ocotillo plants.
