Description
A bolt of lightning amid a distant thunderstorm strikes just east of Elephant Head Butte, a monolith that is said to resemble the head of en elephant in the beautiful Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona. Mount Hopkins, with Whipple Observatory at its peak, and Mount Wrightson, one of the tallest mountains in the Tucson area, stand guard over the lushness of the Sonoran Desert during monsoon season. Sunlight has broken through during this cloudy evening to light up the lush desert landscape, and I included some mesquite trees, prickly pear cactus, and an ocotillo, all representative of this upland region.
This beautiful setting is inspired by views of this range from the west along Interstate 19 as it travels from Tubac to Green Valley, Sahuarita, and eventually Tucson. It is looking northeast from around Tubac. This area is a little too high in elevation to feature the iconic saguaro cactus, but has plenty of grassland and grandeur in its own right. This is loosely based on a cell phone photo I took of the area but it was very blurry so most of it is from memory, imagination, and a keen interpretation of the wow factor that the southwest gives me.
