Description
Windy Point Vista, about halfway up the Catalina Highway, overlooks Tucson, Arizona. On this particular evening during Labor Day Weekend, this spectacular sunset, akin to the iconic sunsets that Arizona is known for, overtook the skies above the granite outcroppings and rugged crags of the southern flank of the Catalina Mountains.
This was one of those sunsets that occurred when least expected, as I've come to find are among the best. Walking away from the guard-railed viewing area, the onlookers didn't expect much of a sunset, as it had been quite gray and cloudy most of the late afternoon. The orb of the sun dipped below the horizon, and the sky remained a dark gray with only a thin band of light on the horizon and it seemed to be getting dark. Most observers including myself began to walk back to our cars. Only when turning back around for one last look did the sky give evidence that the sunset was not over. Within a matter of seconds, the clouds lit up in the most intense hues of gold and orange that I've ever seen. This amounts to the best sunset I've ever seen in Tucson.
