Description
A fiery sunset overtakes the spiny Organ Mountains as soon from the endless sand dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico. Located between Las Cruces and Alamogordo, this off-the-beaten path national park (once a national monument) contains some of the largest fields of gypsum sand on earth. Yucca plants in bloom overlook this wild southwestern scene as dramatic monsoonal rain clouds fill the sky, breaking just enough to reveal a crescent moon and the orb of the setting sun.
New Mexico is one of my favorite states; Las Cruces is one of my favorite cities, and White Sands is one of my favorite national parks, making this piece extra fun to paint. The solitude that the blazing setting sun provides as cool winds blow in off the highlands of the Chihuahuan Desert, blowing in relief from a hot desert day, and knowing the finest green chile burrito in the world will be the reward after the lonely and soul cleansing drive back to Las Cruces; I can't speak enough for my love of the Land of Enchantment; and I hope my attention to nuance in this impressionistic painting transports you there.
