Description
Window Peak of the Santa Catalina Mountains steals the show in my newest southwest landscape painting. Also known as Ventana Peak, this craggy, rocky mountain rises above Ventana Canyon to the north of Tucson, Arizona during a moody, glowing monsoon season sunset. The green lushness of the Sonoran Desert and a couple of saguaro cacti look on as the last light of day hits the "Wonderland of Rocks" area at the peaks of this mighty mountain. The desert vegetation, including mesquite trees, palo verdes, and cresotoe bushes, is green from recent rain. A glimpse of Mount Kimball is visible on the left.
The Catalina Foothills afford unparalleled views of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness, which is a chain of peaks on the southwestern flank of the Catalina Mountains and are the most prominent peaks seen from Tucson. Window Peak (also known as Ventana Peak - Ventana is Spanish for "Window") is named for a natural rock formation near its summit that features a natural window in it. In the Foothills, the highly popular Leows Ventana Canyon Resort overlooks this mountain which takes on so many unique colors and textures at different times of the day. This peak was badly burned during the devastating Bighorn Fire of June, 2020, but the fire has since been contained.
