Description
A glorious Wyoming sunset fills the deep blue sky with pink and magenta cirrus clouds over Chimney Rock in Platte County between Wheatland and Chugwater. These chalky bluffs rise above the colorful, grassy prairie, lush green from late spring snow and rain, right as the sun sets. Looking south, we see Chimney Rock, the lone butte on the right, catching the glow from late evening twilight.
The western landscapes of southeastern Wyoming transition from mountains to rolling hills, bluffs and gulches, to wide swaths of grassy prairie on the Great Plains. Platte County is one of the most dramatic examples of this transition - in the west, it is bounded by the foothills of the rugged Laramie Mountains. Its eastern boundary is flat grassland receding in elevation.
The nearby community of Chugwater, some 45 or so miles north of Cheyenne, is noted for its buttes like this surrounding the area. The oddly named town is said, according to legend, to have been derived from plains Native Americans who referred to this region as "water at the place where the buffalo chug." They would corral herds of bison to the edges of clifftops such as this and chase them off for an easy, instant kill. The "chug" refers sound the bison would make when hitting the creeks at the base of these cliffs. Bison were an important source of food, clothing, and other resources to these Native Americans, and used to roam these plains in the hundreds of thousands.
It is my hope that this painterly, impressionistic work of art takes you the plains of Wyoming during a summer sunset. This is the final painting of a series of Wyoming paintings I have undertaken. I may do more in the future.
