This is a hand drawn digital painting of the iconic deity Kokopelli playing his flute in a dreamy southwestern world inspired by a dream I had where it was day and night and the same time. As the sun sets, ending a scorching hot day over the dry desert landscape, the crescent moon sits high in the sky amid the stars and clouds. This probably takes place in Arizona but is meant to represent the spirit of the Southwestern United States as a whole. Kokopelli has fascinated me for some time. Regarded as a deity of fertility, mischief and rain among Native American cultures and featured on many ancient petroglyphs, he is a timeless symbol of the American Southwest. I would image this to take place somewhere in southern Arizona. This is a work of contrast and symmetry. The top half is a dark, cool nightscape, and the bottom half is a hot, sunny world. About Chance Kafka
Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
