An afternoon storm descends upon the Catalina Mountains to the north of Tucson, Arizona, as radiant sunshine breaks through the clouds to illuminate Mount Kimball. A bolt of lighting strikes the rocky summit of Window Peak, just to the west of Mount Lemmon. The lush Sonoran Desert landscape, fresh and green from the monsoon rains, features the stately Saguaro Cactus, a few springtime golden poppy blooms, prickly pear cactus, ocotillos, and interesting chollas. A windy hiking trail cuts its way through the vegation, leading the viewer into the scene. All but Mount Kimball are deep in shadow of the foreboding clouds.
Thunderstorms are one of my favorite aspects of Arizona's weather - a reprieve from the deadly, dull heat, they bring dynamic, moody clouds, cool atmospheric effects, fog, and brilliant lightning displays. Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
