The full moon glows in the night sky above the Superstition Mountains near Lost Dutchman State Park in Arizona. These locally iconic peaks rise to the east of the Phoenix metro area and are readily visible from Apache Junction. Set on a partly cloudy, starry night, this tranquil scene features the silhouettes of Saguaro cacti soaking up the moonlight. There is nothing quite like a moonlit night in the deserts of the American Southwest.
There is much lore and mythology surrounding these rugged, needled peaks, including the existence of a gold mine somewhere within the range that claims the lives of those who try to find it. Hundreds of square miles of Tonto National Forest land give primitive access to the foreboding canyons high in these mountains, for which hiking is treacherous due to the vertical drop offs, harsh terrain, and deadly heat much of the year, not to mention rattlesnakes and other predators. About Chance Kafka

Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
