Description

The full moon glows in the night sky above the Superstition Mountains near Lost Dutchman State Park in Arizona. These locally iconic peaks rise to the east of the Phoenix metro area and are readily visible from Apache Junction. Set on a partly cloudy, starry night, this tranquil scene features the silhouettes of Saguaro cacti soaking up the moonlight. There is nothing quite like a moonlit night in the deserts of the American Southwest.

There is much lore and mythology surrounding these rugged, needled peaks, including the existence of a gold mine somewhere within the range that claims the lives of those who try to find it. Hundreds of square miles of Tonto National Forest land give primitive access to the foreboding canyons high in these mountains, for which hiking is treacherous due to the vertical drop offs, harsh terrain, and deadly heat much of the year, not to mention rattlesnakes and other predators. It is much more probable that death comes to those who are not prepared for the harsh conditions rather than a spiritual curse, but the aptly named Superstition Mountains are probably best enjoyed for their natural beauty rather than to satisfy the greed of discovering gold. This painting casts the mountains in a rare depiction - a cool, ambient night under the moon. I hope you sense the feeling of peace I hoped to convey, with just a touch of eeriness and vignette effect to symbolize the phantom legends surrounding this peaks. This one of the premier landscapes in the state of Arizona and the American Southwest, and are celebrated in the Phoenix valley.
