Description
A bold, orange Arizona sunset overtakes the skies over Massai Point at Chiricahua National Monument. With shades of glowing orange, gold and red, with undertones of blue and magenta, the advent of summer monsoon season in the Chihuahuan Desert produced great colors. Nearly silhouetted, the rocks, hoodoos, canyons, cliffs, and gorges of the Chiricahua Mountains are visible, as seen from the summit of the scenic road that travels to Massai Point. The American southwest, and Arizona in particular, are notable for their dramatic sunsets. This was no exception. The foreboding deep shadow in Rhyolite Canyon contrast with the sky on fire.
These isolated mountains are in Cochise County, about three hours from Tucson. The closest communities, still nearly an hour away, are Wilcox and Sunizona. Taken on Independence Day, this sunset concluded a quiet day with mosoon clouds in the Chiricahuas. Very few people were at the monument, so it was extremely peaceful and full of solitude. The Dragoon Mountains can be seen way off in the distance.
