Description
I have painted Elephant Head Butte, an interesting monolith of the mighty Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona. This peak, seen on the left, inspires curiosity for those who see it along the communities abutting Interstate 19 as it journeys from Nogales through Rio Rico, Amado, Green Valley, Sahaurita, to its terminus in metro Tucson. Many claim it looks like the head of an elephant during certain times of day, hence its name.
This painting was inspired by a photo of a sunset I took from the mouth of Madera Canyon below Mount Wrightson just at the edge of Coronado National Forest land, and looks westward across the Sonoran Desert upland toward mighty Baboquivari Peak, which can be seen on the right. Another iconic monolith of southern Arizona in its own right, it is a very sacred peak to the Tohono O'odham nation, who believe their Creator resides there. It is readily visible from the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains and appears to turn purple with all of the atmosphere during these classic southwestern sunsets, as do many of the mountain ranges of southern Arizona.
A crescent moon sits low in the sky, chasing the sun that has now been set for a while, as a gold band of light still lights up the western horizon. Clouds turned fiery red float by overhead, as the brightest stars begin to appear in this radiant, tranquil, twilight scene.

Wonderful work on this painting, Chance. Love the pinks and lavender tones in the distant mountains and of course the last bird of the night flying over. LF
