Description
The first light of day strikes Medicine Bow Peak in the Snowy Range west of Laramie, Wyoming. A nearly-full waning gibbous moon sets behind the 12,000 peak overlooking the serene waters of Mirror Lake, aptly named for its reflections of the mountains.
A break in the mysterious alpine forest, its trees still in silhouette shadow at daybreak, affords a beautiful view of the one of the best landscapes the American West has to offer. The Snowy Range, colloquially named by locals due to the incredible amounts of snow it receives, is officially named the Medicine Bow Mountains and rises 30 miles west of Laramie and is part of the North American Rocky Mountains. Medicine Bow Peak, standing at over 12,000 feet tall, is the highest peak in southern Wyoming and overlooks several mountain lakes that are formed by melting snowpack and glaciers. Wyoming State Highway 130 is a scenic byway that traverses the mountains, passing through the Laramie Valley before cresting at the base of the peak and travelling back down into the North Platte River Valley southeast of Rawlins. This lightly travelled, 70 mile highway is closed all winter but is revered as one of the most scenic drives in the US, and views such as this help confirm that sentiment.
This painting was completed per request for commission, and showcases one of my very favorite landscapes.
