Description
The full Harvest Moon rises over Sabino Creek as it flows through Sabino Canyon in the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, Arizona. Thimble Peak and the cliffs atop the canyon catch the last glint of daylight at twilight in a somewhat eerie mood. Autumn has come to the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona.
While most of the desert remains extremely warm in the fall, a but of an increase in elevation can change the scenery dramatically. Sabino Canyon, like the rest of the Catalina Mountains, changed biomes with a simple rise in elevation. Oak trees and sycamores line Sabino Creek, which flows especially with high mountain snow melt or a rainy monsoon season. A small waterfall and rocks are visible in the water, as are some hardier desert succulents including the prickly pear cactus and agave plant. The moon, deep blue earth shadow and magenta Belt of Venus are reflected in the water as two birds fly through the sky. I spent extra time on the changing leaves, introducing colorful orange, yellow, and red hues to pop out the fall colors, and the detail of the branches.
It is my hope that this impressionistic painting of the full moon rising over Sabino Canyon evokes the sense of stillness of this time of day between day and night.
