Description
I have painted the Arizona monsoon striking the mighty Santa Rita Range south of Tucson with full force, showcasing the brilliance of the thunderstorms and landscapes of the American Southwest. These rugged peaks, capped by Mount Wrightson, are being drenched by waves of rain as the summer sun trickles through. A rainbow forms over Mount Wrightson and Madera Canyon as two lightning bolts strike the range. In the foreground, desert plants such as the saguaro and prickly pear cacti, mesquite trees, and ocotillos in bloom thrive as the rains have broken months of hot, sunny weather.
These peaks are the highest in southern Arizona and can be viewed prominently from the city of Tucson and its surrounded communities including Vail and parts of Marana to the north, the Tucson suburbs of Sahuarita and Green Valley to the northwest, Rio Rico, Tubac, and Nogales to the southwest, Patagonia to the south, and Sanoita to the east. Mount Wrightson itself tops out at over 9,000 feet in elevation. The range also contains Elephant Head Butte, which is said to resemble an elephant at certain times of the day and the Whipple Observatory. Like many of the southern Arizona sky island mountain ranges, the Santa Ritas contain large swaths of Coronado National Forest lands and are home to many species of plants and animal life including migratory birds.
The monsoon season, which can begin in June and last until September, brings fast-moving, brilliant thunderstorms that cause much flooding on the roadways, strong winds, spectacular lightning displays, and brilliant rainbows when they clear, and is arguably the most beautiful time of year in the Sonoran Desert. I was compelled to paint this scene since the Santa Rita Mountains are one of my favorite mountain ranges.

I’m sure the 6 hours seemed to fly by and, by the results, definitely worth it. Love all the little details in this painting. Looks like you included a owls den in one of the cacti & love the birds in opposite corners. Great work. LF
