A starry night sky and the Milky Way Galaxy fills the heavens over Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte of Sedona, Arizona. A rocky trail leads through the bushes and junipers into the nocturnal landscape, illuminated by millions of stars. This painterly acrylic painting was inspired by a recent trip to Sedona. I stood near this spot, imagining what a night sky would look like over the southwestern desert landscape. Arizona has some of the best views of stars in the US, with its clear skies and vast, desolate spaces between cities. It is so bright in some spots one can actually see by starlight with a little patience.

The effect of starlight illuminating a landscape is one that has always inspired me and makes its way into many of my paintings. It is an ethereal, almost heavenly look that is too dim to capture with a camera, but makes for a very enjoyable painting.

Sedona is a village along the Oak Creek, nestled in a canyon of fantastic buttes and red rock formations that rival that of anyplace in the world. Situated along the Mogollon Rim of Northern Arizona, it is a very popular area for hikers, tourists, spiritualists, and artists. It is my hope this painting takes you there, and shows you what it would be like on a magical, starry night.
