Description
A nearly full moon is seen rising above the Tortolita Mountains east of Marana, Arizona, north of the Tucson metro area. Seen from the Lower Javelina Trail deep in a canyon in this rugged mountain range near the Ritz Carlton Resort of Dove Mountain, the last light of day illuminates two craggy peaks. Saguaro Cacti dot the landscape as a wide wash is seen below. This painting was inspired by my first visit to this mountain range this spring; the cloudy weather and glints of late day sunlight on the mountains was a sight to behold, along with the prickly pear cactus in bloom.
After the hike on this trail with my girlfriend (who is in much better shape than me and encouraged us to go on these wonderful hikes together), I referred to the Tortolita Mountains as the "forgotten" range of the Tucson area - most people in Tucson seem familiar with the Tucson Mountains, Catalinas, Rincons and Santa Ritas. The Tortolitas are more nondescript and out of the way, but are serenely quiet and boldly beautiful in their own way. Being deep in this canyon felt like being on another planet.
