Description
A fiery red sunset fills the sky with red, gold and orange over the tranquil waters of Festo Lake near Wheatland, Wyoming. The rugged Laramie Mountains, capped by Laramie Peak, serve as a backdrop to this otherworldly scene. The silhouettes of grass along the eastern shore of the lake create a nice frame for the scene. The Laramie Range, seen reflected in the lake, are the northernmost extension of the Rocky Mountain Front Range and cover over 170 miles across southern Wyoming. Laramie Peak is prominent enough to be seen over 100 miles away in some directions. Platte County, among others in Wyoming, have many businesses named after this regal peak. In this western landscape, I worked to capture the deep red aura that often occurs on the high-elevation plains at sunset, especially with stormy or windy weather in the atmosphere.
Festo Lake is fairly nondescript, and not one of the most premier fishing or recreation destinations in the area. But it is the best place to watch a sunset around Wheatland, especially in the summer when the northwesterly sun goes right behind Laramie Peak. As with many areas in wide-open Wyoming, there are seldom people around, so the serenity can be truly enjoyed in solitude.
